The theme is ‘Butterflies, Bees, Bugs & Blooms’. This year carnival organisers have joined up with ‘Balsall Heath Britain in Bloom’ to achieve a gold award. Combining the two events promises to bring a riot of colour to Balsall Heath through floral displays at all of the schools. With the promise of support from local housing organisations, schools, community groups and passionate individuals this year’s range of events looks like being spectacular.

Everyone is Balsall Heath is invited to join an event that aims to have our whole neighbourhood walking/working together to address and find a definite solution to an important issue: rubbish on our streets. There will be three processions, arriving at the park behind Nelson Mandela School - and then some GREAT MUSIC! A performance by the children’s Recycled Orchestra followed by established local bands such as The Dhol Blasters, The Destroyers, Aa’shiq Al-­‐Rasul, Khaliq and Misty’s Big Adventure. And loads of FREE FOOD! A community picnic in the park, where residents can meet their neighbours.

Some Cities is an innovative look at the city around us conceived by photographers Andrew Jackson and Dan Burwood. During the summer of 2013 we’ll train residents in Balsall Heath, Birmingham to use photography to tell their stories in their own voice. Do you want to get involved? THE OPEN PROJECT (TOP) is mac birmingham’s innovative reworking of the ‘open’ exhibition format. Testing the conventions of the gallery, THE OPEN PROJECT has been devised as a platform to explore democratic and collective approaches to exhibition curating.TOP will be a series of four exhibitions curated by Young Curators from mac birmingham's Next Generation programme and an opportunity for artists across the West Midlands to exhibit and sell their art in mac birmingham's prestigious first floor art gallery.


All eligible artworks submitted to the project will be considered by the curators for each of the weekly exhibitions and in addition all artworks are guaranteed place in the closing SALON exhibition, between 22 August and 8 September 2013.

BASIC HORTICULTURE


This is a regular open session on a Saturday 11am to 2pm drop in session (donate what you can afford - no fees) that learners can come and learn while gardening. 

4 hour program.  The following range of topics will be offered: preparation, till and fertiliser; seeding and cropping; managing cultivation. 


FROM SPRING TO AUTUMN 


This is a mixture of learning while doing real horticulture in the fields. Any one program can be chosen or a set. 4 hour programs. Fee = pp £20. Discount for groups.
